Sometimes you may just notice that your iPhone freezes, does not respond or unexpected operations come up. It may surprise you that your iPhone is a computer which can go through such. The iPhone is actually a small sized computer and just like you laptop may hang or freeeze, your iPhone can also do the same.
When such happens to your iPhone, it will be necessary to restart or even reset your iPhone. Reset can mean a lot of things, it could be a basic restart, a more advanced reset or totally wiping out data from the iPhone in a bid to start the phone afresh (factory reset). In this article, we’ll be considering the first two solutions – restart and a more advanced reset.
A quick tip here is to backup your data in case of any problem. A basic restart however won’t wipe out your data, so don’t worry.
How To Reset Older Model iPhones
This method solves problems such as app crashes, Wi-Fi connectivity issues and other common problems. This technique is the same as turning off and on an iPhone. Follow the following steps to restart your iPhone:
STEP 1: Locate the sleep/ wake button on your iPhone. It’s on the right side on iPhone 6 and newer models while on older models, it is on top of the phone)
STEP 2: Hold down the sleep/ wake button until the power-off slider appears on the screen
STEP 3: Release the sleep/ wake button
STEP 4: Shut down the iPhone by moving the power-off slider from left to right. A dim spinner will appear on the screen to show the progress of the shut down.
STEP 5: When the shut down has finished, press down the sleep/wake button until Apple logo appears on the screen. Now release the button. This time, the iPhone is starting up. Wait till the process is completed and you’ve just rebooted the iPhone.
How to Restart iPhone 8 and iPhone X
The sleep/wake button is on right side on this iPhone models. New functions have been assigned to this button such as Siri and so on.
The restart process is quite different from the older models.
STEP 1: Press and hold at the same time, the sleep/wake button and the power down button.
STEP 2: Hold on for the power off slider to come up
STEP 3: Move the slider from left to right to shut down the phone.
How to Reset iPhone (Advanced)
You would want to go for this technique when the basic restart does not solve the problem. Sometimes your phone may freeze and the sleep/wake button may not respond so you should go for a more powerful option like this one. It is also called hard reset.
Doing a hard reset refreshes app data while also restarting the phone. This does not wipe out your data but helps the iPhone to begin from scatch.
How to Hard Reset Older iPhone models
STEP 1: Let the phone screen face you. Press the sleep/wake button down and hold the Home button at the bottom center at the same time.
STEP 2: The power off button will appear but don’t release the buttons. Continue to hold them down until you see a black screen.
STEP 3: Wait until the Apple logo appears on the screen.
STEP 4: At this point, you can let go of the buttons as the iPhone is now resetting.
How to Hard Reset iPhone 8 and iPhone X
The reset process on the iPhone 8 and iPhone X is totally different from other models. The reason is that holding down the sleep/wake button is now used for Emergency SOS feature.
To do the restart on this models,
STEP 1: Press and let go of the volume up button on the left side of the phone
STEP 2: Press and release the volume down button
STEP: Press down the sleep/wake button until the phone restarts and you see the Apple logo
How to Hard Reset iPhone 7 series
Since the iPhone 7 series possesses a 3D Touch panel, the process is slightly different.
With the iPhone 7 series, you just need to hold down the volume down button and the sleep/wake button at the same time without using the home button. So all steps are the same as above except for the home button part.
